Genetical Study of Male Sterility in Carrots , Daucus carota L.

Abstract
There are two types of male sterility in carrots, one is brown anther type and the other is petaloid type. In general brown anther type is superior to petaloid type in the seed production ability but inferior to in the phenotypic stability of male sterility. This experiment was carried out to check the possibility of breeding the brown anther type male sterile lines with high phenotypic stability and to confirm genetical similarity of male sterility of Shin Kurota I, the brown anther type, and Spartan Bonus, the petaloid type, by crossing with maintainers of male sterile lines derived from Shin Kurota I to male sterile plants found in Spartan Bonus. As the result the inheritance of male sterility of Spartan Bonus was confirmed to be identical with or very similar to that of Shin Kurota I. And it seems possible to breed the male sterile lines of brown anther type which is almost equally stable as petaloid type does.
